Manhattan Bridge

The construction on the momentous Manhattan Bridge began in 1901 and was fully completed in 1910. The total length of the bridge is 5,780 feet. The Bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff. The Manhattan Bridge carries, truck subway, automobile, pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic over the East River. The Bridge consists of seven lanes for motor vehicles, four transit train lines, a pedestrian walkway and a bikeway. According to http://www.nyc.gov every day, 75% of all Manhattan Bridge crossings are by public transit, on foot or on bike - 3,000 bicyclists and pedestrians and 320,000 transit riders daily. On an average weekday, the Manhattan Bridge accommodates 75,000 vehicles.


Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway original constructed August 30, 1956, only for southbound traffic. It did not open for northbound traffic for another ten years.  It is listed in the genius world record book as the longest bridge over water. The bridge is supported by 9,500 concrete pilings. The bridge also has a bascule feature (drawbridge) that spans for eight miles.


Golden Gate Bridge

The golden gate bridge located at the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. It was opened 74 years ago, May 27, 1937. The bridge was originally colored orange because of the prevention of erosion, many local persuaded Irving Morrow, the designer of the bridge, to keep it that color instead of the usual silver or grey. The long suspension bridge is constructed out of steel and has a total length of 1.7mi.



Seikan Tunnel

The Seikan Tunnel is a 33.46 mi tunnel located in Japan. A 14.5 mi long portion is also under water. It’s about 460 feet below seabed and 790 feet below sea level.  The tunnel is the longest and the deepest operating railway tunnel in the world. It is also the longest underwater tunnels in the world. It was opened march 13 1988.


The Gotthard Road Tunnel

The Gotthard Road Tunnel is located in Switzerland. It was opened on September 5, 1980 in response to an increase of automobile traffic and at the same time Italy became more popular as a tourist attraction. Also a tragic accident happened in the tunnel were a fire broke out and because of the confined space eleven people and many were injured
